Connecting With Your Word of the Year
You've done your research and picked your word for the year but now what? What do you do with that word now that you have it? How do you live with your word and make it more visible in your life?
Let's face it, most of us choose a word in January and by the end of February we're lucky if we can remember what it was and why we picked it.
To get the most out of the process of choosing a word to focus on for the year is to build a deeper connection with your word throughout the year. I'm pretty good at remembering my word and keeping it in my thoughts through the year but it's helpful to make it feel more official.
Vision Board
One of my favorite ways to connect with my word is to create a vision board. For me, this goes way back to the eighties and my high-school days. I was always cutting out images from magazines and hanging them on my bedroom wall or in my locker at school. I even had a notebook that I used to save all the teen bedroom decorating ideas loved and would change my room around all the time. Now that I think about it, it was kind of like having physical Pinterest boards.
Creating a vision board is super easy. Get some poster board and a stack of magazines. Cut out all the images that "feel" like your word. Or, you can create a secret board in Pinterest and save your favorite images there.
Monthly Reviews
I am big fan of monthly check-ins. They let you know where you've been and which direction you need to go next.
I highly recommend doing monthly review's on the first Sunday of each month. Give yourself half an hour or so to sit with your journal and reflect on the reason you chose your word. Ask yourself:
How has your word been supporting you?
What can you do to make your word more visible in your life?
Other ideas to try:
Add your word to a photo and set it as your desktop wallpaper or your screen saver.
Get physical and write your word on sticky-notes and then stick them everywhere.
Create a music playlist.
Wear your word as a ring, necklace or bracelet.
In my experience our words work their magic whether we check in on them or not, but making them visible will certainly boost their power.
